Children's Portraits

Children grow and change so quickly.  Just as you are getting to know and love your child as a baby with those dimples and buddha belly,  suddenly,  you have a toddler with saggy diapers and sticky hands and just as you are falling in love with all  those funny words and expressions, you have a busy preschooler who is mastering bicycle riding, making friends and learning to read.  In a blink of an eye you are sitting down to pick out colleges and prom dresses.

I will work from your photographs to create a completely personalized, highly detailed, hand painted watercolor on museum quality paper using only the finest juicy watercolors. Your portrait will be a cherished heirloom or a precious gift to your loved ones and it will appreciate in value over the years.

Unlike a photograph, all details in your portrait can be personalized for you.  I can change the colors to match your décor or combine several photographs to get the best expression on each subject or change the background to one that has significance for you.

Let me help you to hold onto the joy of  those moments you would most like to remember in a work of art that you and your children will treasure forever.  Every detail will be personalized for you... the colors will match your house, your child will be shown in a favorite expression or activity.  All the details are up to you.  Each of the paintings you see below puts a smile in the heart of its owner every time they walk past.

In addition to your original portrait I can provide you with giclee prints, note cards and other imprinted items, so you can share your memories with grandparents, aunts and uncles and other important family members.

POP ART PORTRAITS

All I require from you are a few good quality photos and some stories about your child(ren).  Each portrait will tell a story about your family. Tell me about each person in the portrait: are they studious or silly ?  What do they enjoy doing more than anything ?  Is it a sport, a toy, a pet, a game, a place ?  How about a favorite shirt or dress ? Where are you living ?  What do you like best about the place you live ?  Does your child have a particular expression that just makes you laugh, or smile ?  The more personal information I have the more personal your portrait will become.

The process of commissioning a portrait is very simple.  Read through my Pricing Page and the Commissioning a Portrait page, then Contact Me with your photos.  It takes about 6 to 8 weeks to complete a portrait, but I will try to accomodate special events such as birthdays and holidays.  I will e-mail a scan of my work for your approval and input as the portrait develops and I will return your photos when I am finished.

My paintings go through many stages before the final painting is even started.

a.     I work closely with you to personalize the subject and add details that will have meaning to you.

b.     Then, I begin the drawing process by combining the photos you have given me into a drawing that will contain all the elements.

c.      Next, I work out a value arrangement that will draw the viewer’s eye first to the face you most want to see and then carefully guide the viewer on a tour of the painting.

d.     After that, I start to work out a color arrangement, much the way a songwriter works with melodious musical chords, I work out a harmonious color chord and apply it to the sketch as a first draft.

e.      Once I have the whole painting planned out in this way I begin to work on the final painting.  The final painting has hundreds of carefully applied layers of watercolor and relies on my 30 years as a watercolor artist to bring out the expression and personality of my subject.

Sebastian & Linnea

Susan did a wonderful job capturing my children's mood and personalities in this painting, Sebastian is always loving and caring to his little sister and Linnea just thrilled to be with him. It makes us smile every day. I mailed prints to family both in Sweden and all over America and I'm receiving rave reviews from all. I highly recommend Susan, she is a pleasure to work with. Thank you Susan we will treasure this piece forever.

Cookie & Daniel
I love working with children and pets interacting.  Cookie loves floating around the pool on her mat.  We have even caught her in the pool by herself.  Daniel and she have a wonderful relationship and this picture captures them doing one of their favorite things together.

Mikaela

I asked Susan to take part of one picture and transpose that with another picture. One picture is of Mikaela's last birthday and the other one is one of our favorite beaches in So. California. She said she could do it, and believe me, I was surprised to see she did do it. The painting turned out much better than I could have imagined it would be. I am so pleased with the results, and the likeness. I will recommend her to everyone.

We will cherish the painting forever!
